Q. Is Champion Garage Builders Insured?
Yes. A copy of insurance, and state contractors registration are available on the website at the bottom of the page.
Q. Who gets the permit?
I typically get all permits. Sometimes in the smaller communities, it is easier for the homeowner just to go to their local city hall and pay the $10 to pick it up themselves. In the larger cities, the process is a little more complicated, and I can typically get the permit in one trip, whereas the homeowner may have to make several, just because they are not familiar with the process.
Q. How big of a garage can I build?
Most cities have zoning laws which govern the amount of accessory structure square footage allowed on your particular lot. You may also have neighborhood covenants that will limit your ability to build large structures, if any at all. The easiest way to find out is to make a call to your local planning and zoning office, or simply call me and I will do the legwork for you.
Q. How big of a detached garage can I build WITHOUT frost footings?
This again, varies in each city. In Des Moines and the surrounding communities, the number is typically 720 sq. feet and below DO NOT require a frost footing. In the Cedar Rapids area, the number is 1250 sq. feet and below DO NOT require FF's. In Waterloo and Cedar falls the number is 850 sq feet and below.
Q. What is a frost footing?
Most cold-climate building codes require you to place foundation footings below the frost line when constructing a large building (see FAQ#4). The easiest frost footing is done by simply trenching the perimeter of the building site to a depth of 42", with a width of 8-12", and filling with concrete and the required reinforcing rods. The goal is to protect foundations from frost heaving. Click to see example.
Q. If I decide to purchase a garage when does Champion expect payment?
Champion divides the cost of the project into thirds. We will ask you for 1/3 down, 1/3 when the cement is poured, and 1/3 upon completion. We believe this format is fair and have used it for many years with rarely an objection! If the customer already has their concrete in place, then we will ask for half down and the remaining half, upon completion.
